M50454

This car is identical to our headquarters vehicle, M50447, and has a very similar history. It can be recognised as a London Midland Car by the wood-finish interior which along with the high-back seats gives this train a very luxurious feel.
The car is fitted with two Leyland 680 engines driving mechanical transmission through a fluid flywheel - a system which was derived from road practice.

Built in 1957 as part of lot no 30293 this car was originally part of a three-car London Midland Region set, of which there were 51 in this batch. It was saved for preservation in 1993 and, after some restoration, originally ran in blue livery but was later painted in green following heavy refurbishment in 1994. The class 104 is particularly popular with enthusiasts because of the distinctive sound made by its exhausts.

During 2007 this vehicle was fitted with a new cab after the original became so rotten that it was unable to be repaired. The replacement is, however, difficult to distinguish from the original except that it has full-working route indicator blinds fitted. Further work is planned over the coming year to repair other areas of the carriage which have suffered from corrosion after which the train will appear in yet another new livery - the fourth since it arrive at Llangollen.
This train has covered some 19,000 miles on the Llangollen Railway since it arrived in 1994 and has seen service on every year bar one, when it was under repair.
