Production of what are now called "heritage" or "first-generation" railcars began in 1954 and was completed by 1963 by which time 4,600 were in service. Many of the earlier and experimental types were scrapped between 1968 and 1972 but we have been successful in rescuing some which had been previously preserved but which were in danger of being broken up.
We have saved a good cross-section of types which include the only surviving Wickham two-car set, the only complete Gloucester class 100 set and one of the only two Cravens trailers left. We also have one of only two Birmingham R and C W Class 104 sets in public service.
Also in the collection is a 1984-built Leyland/BREL railbus of class 141 which was the first of the "second generation" types to be made. This is a very important train historically and although more modern than others we have saved it is valuable for a number of historical and engineering reasons.
