This is the only surviving Driving Trailer from Wickham of Ware and it was restored from a gutted wreck.
Its history follows closely that of its partner E50416 and it too featured a number of unusual features. The interior was panelled exclusively in aluminium and the draught screens were more a reminder of India than Hertfordshire! Because of their construction the Wickham cars featured much more window area than many other designs but they were phased out as non-standard along with a number of other small classes in 1972.
This car had been heavily modified for its departmental role and the restoration team had to strip it to a shell. Windows and doors which had been removed and plated over have been reinstated and a completely new interior made and fitted. The coach has also been completely rewired.
The pictures taken before restoration ( below ) and afterwards ( above ) tell their own story.

This vehicle was restored between 1993 and 2003 and major funding was provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The restoration was awarded the "Small Groups" prize by the Heritage Railways Association in 2004.

The Wickham is seen here in its unrestored condition and before restoration started.

This train is normally used on off-peak weekday services and on gala services. It sees most use in the Spring and Autumn and is kept inside a shed during the worst of the weather to preserve its bodywork and immaculate interior.
