51118 is currently in store at the Midland Railway-Butterley while funds are found to restore it. Picture taken Spring 2009.
Introduced into service in December 1957 this vehicle was originally allocated to 64A Edinburgh St Margaret's and was paired with 56310. By 1962 it was at Leith Central and by 1967 was allocated to Hamilton, near Glasgow. The following year it was at South Gosforth, near Newcastle.
Withdrawn by British Railways as long ago as 1974 this car was one of two which was purchased by the North Yorkshire Railway and ran as their number S11 until 1985. It then passed to the Swanage Railway for a year before being sent to the West Somerset where it stayed until 1995.Whilst there its sister car was scrapped as life-expired, despite its historical significance. It was then moved into private store at Snetterton because it was lined with blue asbestos and was in poor condition. When the project for which it had been destined collapsed there was a real chance that it would be cut up for scrap but we were able to save it at the last minute and arrange for it to be moved to the Midland Railway-Butterley where the asbestos was removed. The car is currently in store awaiting full restoration. Much work has been done on estimates and the sourcing of parts and we hope to be in a position to progress this restoration shortly.
We have all the parts required to complete this vehicle, including all the interior, but we estimate that around £100,000 will be needed to restore it to "as new" condition.
